Our History
BMATA history starts in 2001, when the couple Lysenko realized that wild birds where maintained in captivity in conditions that were inadequate according to their biology.
Trying to change this situation they began a project to obtain a permit with IBAMA to start a conservationist breeding facility, in the Southern coas of the Sao Paulo state, 100 km away from the capital.
The license obtained in 2003 allowed them to start developing husbandry practices to rehabilitate confiscated birds. They had the goal of developing natural techniques that were able to help the birds recover after many years of being held in captivity and suffering with neglect.
With the growing number of birds arriving in the aviaries and the need of expanding their work, they founded in 2005 the Bichos da Mata Association – BMATA – starting a partnership with IBAMA for releasing birds in Tremedal - located in the Bahia state Northeastern of Brazil.
In 2006, BMATA sent a batch of 33 blue-fronted Amazons – Amazona aestiva – to Tremedal.
Being well succeeded this release ended with the myth that birds kept for a long time in captivity could never be released back to its natural environment. Since those days, BMATA has accomplished the release of hundreds of birds.
In 2009, BMATA asked for a permit to be classified as a Rehabilitation Center of Wild Animals (CRAS) that will allow developing of techniques and partnerships that will enhance the range of its efforts.
